Research ICT Africa and APC make this joint submission in the public interest to ensure that the internet, and access to it, can be a force for good in South Africa rather than becoming a tool which benefits some and leaves marginalised or vulnerable communities (including children) further behind. 

In 2018, the First Committee established two parallel processes to discuss responsible state behaviour in cyberspace: the UN Group of Governmental Experts and the Open Ended Working Group. This explainer offers human rights defenders the information they need to engage with these processes.

Among human rights defenders (HRDs), those working on land, indigenous peoples’ and environmental rights are the most targeted group. This session aimed at sharing collective digital security strategies used by rural communities and environmental HRDs to mitigate the risks they face.
