Internet rights are human rights
In this response to the call by the Special Rapporteur on freedom of opinion and expression for contributions to the thematic report to be presented to the 76th session of the UN General Assembly, APC addresses the issue of gender justice and its intersection with these rights from a feminist lens.
Last year, APC organised the Internet Rules: Unboxing Digital Laws in South Asia workshop. We are preparing a new chapter of this workshop, and we invite you to relive last year’s event through participants' shared vision for digital rights in South Asia.
How are APC members improving their communities’ lives? For CITAD, this has manifested in the development of numerous projects aimed at bridging digital divides and empowering local communities in Nigeria.
As international, regional and national civil society organisations working at the intersection of technology and human rights, we call on the world's governments to lift the intellectual property barriers that hinder universal access to health care and free COVID-19 vaccination for all.
APC joins in the condemnation of the suspension of Twitter services in Nigeria, and considers that this measure not only limits Nigerian citizens' exercise of their right to access information, but also other rights including freedom of expression, privacy, and freedom of assembly and association.
APC sees RightsCon as a convening space for strategising and networking, as well as an opportunity to showcase APC’s work and perspectives on human rights in the digital space, a feminist internet, access and digital inclusion, social justice and environmental sustainability.
How are APC members improving their communities' lives? In Argentina, Nodo TAU has made meaningful contributions to environmental sustainability movements by giving local communities access to e-waste recycling.
From 6 to 18 May 2021, 7amleh worked to document and respond to the digital rights violations occurring during the 2021 Israeli attacks on Gaza, on Palestinians in mixed cities in Israel, and forcible displacement of Palestinians in East Jerusalem.
Four African digital rights-centred networks have committed to increasing collaboration for the consolidation of their work and avoidance of duplication of activities while ensuring the full attainment and protection of digital rights at national, regional and global levels.
The undersigned human rights and digital rights organisations urge Google to immediately halt its plan to establish a new Google Cloud region in Saudi Arabia until the company can publicly demonstrate how it will mitigate adverse human rights impacts.
